IELTS writing test
The Academic IELTS writing test consists of two tasks and you will have one hour to write it. In task two of the IELTS writing test, a viewpoint, argument or issue is presented and the topics may be about the environment, migration, culture or technology. Depending on the type of task, you may be asked to write about your own view, discuss two different viewpoints. You may also be asked to write about the advantages and disadvantages of a viewpoint, explain a specific problem, address its causes or suggest solutions for it.
In task one tIELTS Writing Task 1In Academic, a chart, table, diagram or map is presented, and you must write a report describing the information accordingly.
In Task 1 of the IELTS General Training Writing test, specific circumstances are described for you and you must write a letter. For example, you might need to write a letter making suggestions to improve library facilities. Your ability to provide information in response to the task, express needs, state preferences, present points of view and voice complaints will be assessed.
How to evaluate IELTS writing test and general strategies for increasing your score
You are assessed based on four main criteria: grammatical range and accuracy, lexical resource, coherence, and task achievement.
Grammatical diversity and accuracy (Grammatical Range and Accuracy)
You can increase your score by using a wide range of grammatical structures accurately. In doing so, you need to go beyond basic grammar. Another thing you need to pay attention to is correct punctuation and spelling.
Vocabulary source (Lexical Resource)
In Writing Task 2 you need to write about topics of interest to an educated reader, which requires a good knowledge of a variety of topic-related vocabulary. Otherwise, you will write an essay that is too general and this will severely affect your score. However, I must say it is better to write simple and correct English than to try to use advanced English and do it badly!
Harmony (Coherence and Cohesion)
Your article must be easy to understand. This involves creating a well-structured text at three levels: sentence, paragraph, and article.
Response to the task (Task Response)
As previously mentioned, you are expected to write at least 250 words in Task 2.IELTS Writing Task 2Write. If you do not do this, your mark will be reduced. However, writing 250 words is not a guarantee of receiving the mark allocated to this criterion.
Using long phrases solely for the purpose of padding the text and unnecessary repetition is not effective for achieving a high score.
You must use ideas that are sufficiently supported by reasoning and examples.
Writing more than 350 words is not recommended.
In addition to language skills, you also need intellectual skills such as ideation so that you can generate ideas upon which to base your essay.
