What Is IELTS?

IELTS IELTS: The International English Language Testing System is an English language proficiency test for study, work, and migration. With more than 4 million tests taken each year, IELTS is recognised by approximately 12,500 organisations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations, and governments, across 150 countries worldwide.

How Do I Book My IELTS Test?
It is simple. Just choose your preferred IELTS test centre and select a suitable test date. Once you have made your selection, follow the instructions to book your test. Make sure you have your passport with you when entering your personal details. If you encounter any problems when booking your test, contact the IELTS customer support team. They will assist you in completing your booking.

Can I Take All Parts of the Test on the Same Day?
This depends on your test location. Therefore, please contact your test centre for further details. The Listening, Reading, and Writing Tests are held on the same day. Subject to arrangements with your test centre, you may also be able to take the Speaking Test on the same day.

When Can I Take the Test Again?
There is no time limit on retaking the test. However, it is strongly recommended that you practise your Writing, Reading, or Speaking skills until you are confident that you are sufficiently prepared to retake the test and improve your score.

I Have an Accent – Will I Be Understood?
IELTS is an international test that accepts all accents. In the Speaking Test, you will not lose marks for speaking with an accent; however, pronunciation is important. Make sure that your speaking rate is appropriate and that your speech is clear and comprehensible. If you have difficulty understanding a question, you can ask the examiner to clarify it.

When Will I Receive My Official IELTS Test Results?
Computer-Delivered IELTS:
Your results will be released between 1 and 5 days after you take the test. You will receive an email when your eTRF (electronic Test Report Form) is ready. Log in to your IDP IELTS account to access and download your eTRF.

Paper-Based IELTS:
Your results will be released 13 calendar days after you take the test. How you receive your results depends on the IELTS test centre where you take the test. Some test centres will notify you when your results are available. You may also receive your Test Report Form (TRF) by post within 5 days.

Can I View My IELTS Results Online?
You can view your provisional IELTS results online. However, these should not be used as official confirmation of your performance – only the TRF or eTRF is considered official confirmation of your results. Have your passport details and test date ready to view your results online.

What Should I Do If I Want to Appeal My Test Score?
You should submit a request to appeal your IELTS results within six weeks of taking the test. For further information, please contact the IELTS customer support team.

Will the IELTS Test Be Easier If I Take It in Another Country?
IELTS is an international test developed by Cambridge. Cambridge carefully develops every part of each new test to ensure a consistent level of difficulty. You can be confident that all aspects of the test are the same, regardless of where in the world you take it. It is recommended that you take the test at your preferred test centre, where you feel comfortable and which is ideally suited to your needs.

How Is IELTS Scored?
A robust structure and process are in place to ensure that IELTS scoring is consistent, regardless of where in the world you take the test. Examiners follow comprehensive assessment criteria when evaluating your language skills. Examiners also receive standardised training worldwide, and a rigorous monitoring process is in place to ensure the quality and consistency of scoring.

What Is the IELTS Band Scale?
You will receive a score from 1 to 9 for each part of the test: Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading. The average of your overall scores produces your overall band score. For each part of the test, you can achieve either a whole band score (e.g. 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or a half band score (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).

What Can I Take into the Test Room?
You may only bring a pen, pencil, eraser, and the valid passport you used when completing your IELTS application form into the test room. All other belongings must be left outside the test room.

If you make a mistake while writing a letter or essay, is it better to use an eraser or cross out the incorrect word and continue? What is the correct approach?

If you have an eraser, it is better to erase the mistake and replace it with the correct word. If your writing contains a large number of crossings-out, it may look untidy and could make it more difficult for the examiner to read. Neat presentation and clear handwriting make the reading process easier. If you are taking the test at a centre where only pens are permitted, try to cross out the incorrect word or phrase neatly and write the correction as clearly and neatly as possible either above it or beside it.

Can I Write in Capital Letters?

We recommend writing all your Reading and Listening answers in capital letters to make them clear and easy for the examiner to read.

However, in the Writing Test, it is very important to use correct capitalisation, as capitalisation and punctuation are assessed as part of the Grammatical Range and Accuracy criterion.

In computer-delivered IELTS, can I take notes using paper and a pencil during the Listening Test? Do I also have 10 minutes to transfer my answers to the answer sheet?

There is no computer. You enter your answers directly as you hear them. You will be provided with a pencil and a sheet of paper containing your login details, which you can use to make notes.

IELTS Validity

Find out about the validity period of IELTS results in different countries and how to check the validity of your IELTS Test Report Form.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language test designed to help individuals work, study, or migrate to a country where English is the main language. IELTS is the world’s most popular English language test and is recognised by numerous countries and institutions worldwide.

The validity of your IELTS results depends on the country and organisation to which you submit them.

IELTS Validity Period in Different Countries

Australia

Usually, your IELTS results are valid for two years. However, IELTS results for Skilled Migration programmes are valid for a period of three years. If you wish to work in Australia, you will need to take the IELTS test, and different occupations have different IELTS score requirements. For example, a minimum score of 6 in each component is required to work as an engineer in Australia. By contrast, to work as a nurse, you need an overall score of at least 7.

Canada

Regardless of which test you take, your test results must have been issued within the past two years (24 months) to be valid for a permanent residency application. If your results have expired, you will need to retake the test. Otherwise, your application may be considered incomplete or may be refused.

Can I Use Expired IELTS Results for Permanent Residency (PR)?

There are three different pathways to obtaining permanent residency in Canada.

(Federal Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class.)

You must ensure that your IELTS test results remain valid throughout the entire six-month period that IRCC requires to process your application.

Express Entry requires a minimum language proficiency level of CLB 7, equivalent to an IELTS score of 6, to be eligible for permanent residency.

The United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the United States

Based on the recognised concept of second-language attrition, IELTS test organisers recommend a two-year validity period for test results. However, the validity period ultimately depends on the organisation, which may choose a period that best meets its requirements, depending on the type of test you take.

IELTS Test Report Form (TRF)

A copy of your IELTS score is provided on your Test Report Form, or TRF. You will receive only one copy of your IELTS Test Report Form, which is valid for two years. If you are applying to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) or the UK Border Agency (UKBA), you may receive two copies of your TRF. To obtain these two copies, you must provide evidence of your application to CIC and UKBA.
