IELTS Speaking Test

The Speaking Test assesses your ability to communicate in English and is conducted by an IELTS examiner. The test consists of three parts and takes approximately 11 to 15 minutes to complete. In Part 1, you will be asked questions about familiar and general topics, such as your work, family, studies, interests, and hobbies. The entire test is recorded.

In Part 2 of the test, you will be given a topic to talk about. You will be provided with a piece of paper and a pencil and will have one minute to prepare before speaking about the topic for two minutes. In Part 3, you will be asked more complex questions related to the topic discussed in Part 2.

The Speaking Test may take place on the same day as the written test, up to one week before it, or up to one week after it.

How to evaluate How the IELTS Speaking Test Is Assessed and General Strategies for Improving Your Score

Your speaking ability is assessed based on four main criteria.

Fluency and Coherence (Fluency and Coherence)

Fluency is important. Try to minimise hesitation, repetition, and self-correction as much as possible. Your speech should also be coherent. Expand your answers where appropriate by adding relevant details and using linking words such as “because”, “if”, “for example”, and so on.

Vocabulary source  (Lexical Resource)

To achieve a high score, you should use topic-specific vocabulary and accurate, natural collocations.

Avoid overusing general words such as “good”, “nice”, and “interesting” for every topic. Using idioms and idiomatic expressions accurately can also help you improve your score significantly.

Avoid unnecessary repetition of similar words and try to use a range of vocabulary to convey the same meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Grammatical Range and Accuracy)

If your speech contains frequent basic grammatical errors, your score will be reduced, even if you speak fluently.

Do not rely solely on simple grammatical structures; instead, try to vary your speech by using a range of different structures.

Pronunciation (Pronunciation)

Your speech should be clear and easily understandable. If you make too many pronunciation errors, your score will be reduced.

Correct word stress is important. You should also be able to use a wide range of phonological features, such as intonation and rhythm, accurately.

Although you can speak English with different accents, such as American and British English, try to master one accent accurately and use it consistently in the test.
